Welcome Letter
A letter from the Holistic Education Review (HER) Co-Editors:
Hello Holistic Education Review readers!
Paul and I are honored – humbled – to be assuming the role of continuing the legacy of The Holistic Educator that Gary Babiuk and Susan Schiller have served for many years. We will endeavor to use the publication to nurture the holistic education movement as it continues to evolve into the Holistic Education Review.
The Holistic Education Review (HER) is published as an Open Access Journal, meaning that we are providing immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Your conversation will become part of “the commons.” There is no copyright and no one will be required to pay a fee of any kind to view it. It may be excerpted, cited, or even re-published without restriction, simply by citing the publication in which it first appeared.
Your place on the email/recipient list therefore is simply to announce that the journal exists and to provide contents and links so readers can locate it online.
The mission of the Holistic Education Review is to:
- Enhance and broaden the scholarship of holistic education
- Lift up diverse and emerging voices of holistic education practice
- Connect the holistic education community

It is an honor to accept the reins for The Holistic Educator from Susan and Gary, and to share the leadership of this project with my friends and colleagues. I look forward to serving the needs of the holistic education community.

I teach Educational Leadership, Adult Learning, and Holistic Classroom Management courses at Southern Oregon University, in Ashland, OR. I have over 20 years experience as a holistic school leader in unique public and private schools, where we used a holistic, human-centered approach toward closing the opportunity gap and uplifting the human spirit. My doctoral degree is from Columbia University Teachers College where I studied Organizational Development/Adult Learning, through a program that focused largely on transformative learning. In both my practice and research, I continue to view education through the lens of transformative learning, both at the individual level and at the systems level.

I was born and raised in Medford, Oregon and attended University of Oregon before setting off to explore and teach abroad in Central and South America. I first gained experience in Holistic Teaching and Learning while teaching at a private, holistic high school in San Lucas, Guatemala. After teaching at this school for 3 years and learning a little bit about the philosophies and principles around holistic education, I returned to the United States to pursue my Masters degree in Adult Education. This is when my interest in and passion for holistic education and lifelong learning began to take form. I am so excited to be involved with the the Holistic Education Review journal and to continue learning about holistic teaching and learning.
