Host: Dr. Erick Gordon
Description: “Experience an immersive approach to reading that moves beyond traditional analytical methods. In this Literacy Unbound workshop, we will engage with various texts—from fairy tales to Franz Kafka —through movement, voice, and gesture. Creative play will guide us as we uncover new layers of
meaning, both personal and collective, in this embodied reading experience. In the last part of the workshop, we’ll shift our attention to curriculum, exploring texts, strategies, and objectives to consider how this work can foster deeper understanding, empathy, and a stronger sense of community.
————
This workshop invites participants into a collaborative approach to reading that strengthens both
self-awareness and social awareness. By engaging with literature physically—through movement, voice, and creative expression—students deepen their connection to their own emotions, thoughts, and values in relation to a text. The process builds confidence in self-expression and a greater sense of bodily awareness, allowing literature to act as both a mirror for personal reflection and a bridge to understanding others. Participants also develop a heightened sensitivity to different perspectives,
fostering empathy and a deeper awareness of the social and cultural forces that shape our experiences.”
